Session-by-Session Highlights:
Session 1:
We begin with deep self-work through a series of reflection exercises, incorporating mindfulness, breathing exercises, and writing. Rooting down into knowledge of self is crucial to the beginning of any learning journey, and certainly even more so when we are attempting to unlearn, or UNLRN, the patterns that have kept us held fast by systems of oppression.
Concepts covered:
Land and Self
The triumvirate: Power, Privilege, and Oppression
The Role of Empathy in Justice
Beginning Your Path to Action - Action Planning Begins
Session 2:
This week, we move on to locating historical contexts, and hone in on vocabulary and methodology. It’s important to make sure we mean the same things by the words we say—words matter, and this week we will begin to dive in to their meanings.
Concepts covered:
Historical contexts—the Global
Indigeneities & Indigenous Sovereignty
The Role of Capital
Systems & Complexes of Oppression
Session 3:
In our third session, we synthesize the space between the self and the knowledge. Additional mindfulness-centred exercises will be used to make the connections between our own experiences/accountabilities and the learning and unlrning over the past weeks.
Concepts covered:
Gender and Sexual Identity
Intersectionality Introduced
Disability Justice
Session 4:
This session we return to Intersectionality to extend its definitions and implications. We begin to draw connections between global contexts, structures, and systems, and give names to those connected webs.
Concepts covered:
Intersectionality Redux
Global Feminisms
White Supremacist Cisheteropatriarchy
Blackness & Indigeneity
Session 5:
This week, we move on to the crux of the work—ACTION. What can this mean? Where are we coming from when we decide to do so? With whom and how and where do we do this work? Where are we coming from when we do it? Extensive self-work exercises pair with our lecture session sorting through the myriad ways of taking action for equity and social justice.
Concepts covered:
Solidarity & Sovereignty
Allyship/Accomplicehood
Accountability
Taking Action
Session 6:
In our final session of ROOTS Bloom, we ground down, ensuring that our roots are strong and steadfast as we step forward into our ongoing work. An exercise-heavy week, this refocuses attention to how you personally, in your work and life, will step forward with intention, accountability, and responsibility with whatever means you have to do so, in whichever environments and contexts you inhabit.
Concepts covered:
Self-care in Social Justice
